Pilgrimage to Joroan
A Journey of Faith: The Pilgrimage to Joroan
Every 3rd Saturday of August, the quiet coastal village of Joroan in Tiwi, Albay transforms into a sacred ground of devotion and celebration as thousands of faithful gather for the annual Pilgrimage to Joroan. At the heart of this spiritual tradition is Our Lady of Salvation, the miraculous Patroness of Albay, whose image has inspired countless testimonies of healing, protection, and answered prayers. This centuries-old pilgrimage is more than a religious observance — it is a heartfelt expression of faith, hope, and deep communal reverence.
The pilgrimage begins with a mass at the historic Joroan Church, where devotees gather in solemn prayer and thanksgiving. The most awaited moment follows: a maritime procession that brings the sacred image of Our Lady of Salvation from the church down to the beach, where it is carefully placed onto a large, beautifully adorned trawl boat. Accompanied by an entourage of festively decorated pump boats filled with singing pilgrims, the procession sails across the sea — a moving spectacle of devotion that reflects the unwavering faith of the Bicolano people.
The journey culminates at the village of Sogod, where a concelebrated mass is held once again in honor of the Virgin. For many, this pilgrimage is not just a tradition but a personal spiritual renewal — a time to offer prayers, reflect, and feel connected to something greater. Whether you are a long-time devotee or a first-time pilgrim, the Pilgrimage to Joroan offers a deeply moving and unforgettable encounter with the sacred, set against the serene beauty of Albay’s coastal waters.
